Devotional Insights
Frequently Asked Questions
What is Karma?
Karma is the universal law of cause and effect—the spiritual equivalent of Newton’s third law. Every action creates a reaction: pious acts bring future happiness, while selfish acts result in suffering. This cycle follows the soul through this life and into the next, determining our future circumstances, such as health, family, and even our physical body. By understanding karma, we can adjust our lives to move beyond ignorance and find true happiness.
Why Vegetarianism?
Our diet is rooted in ahimsa, or non-violence. We believe God is the Supreme Father of all living beings, making the slaughter of animals a violation of spiritual brotherhood. Devotees follow a lacto-vegetarian diet, avoiding meat, fish, and eggs to minimize suffering and avoid karmic reactions. We offer our meals to Krishna first, transforming food into prasadam (sanctified mercy), which nourishes the soul without creating karma.
What is the Goal of Life?
The goal of life is to re-establish our lost relationship with the Supreme Lord, Sri Krishna. As spirit souls, we often search for love in the temporary material world, only to find frustration. Real, lasting happiness is found by reawakening our dormant Krishna Consciousness. By chanting His names and serving others, we attain prema bhakti—the highest transcendental love characterized by eternity, knowledge, and bliss.
What is the Hare Krishna Mantra?
A mantra is a spiritual sound vibration that purifies the heart. The Hare Krishna mantra is the recommended method for spiritual realization in this age:
Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare
“Krishna” means All-Attractive, “Rama” means the Reservoir of Pleasure, and “Hare” refers to God’s energy. Chanting is a prayer that means, “O Lord, please engage me in Your service.” It can be practiced individually (japa) or in a group (kirtana).
Why Remove Shoes Before Entering Temple?
Removing shoes is a gesture of respect and a practical way to maintain temple sanctity. Just as we leave dirt outside, we aim to leave behind our worldly ego and mental distractions. This tradition preserves the purity of God’s home and helps the mind become more receptive to meditation. By shedding our footwear, we symbolically leave the material world behind to enter a sacred space of devotion.
Why is there Bowing Down at the Temple?
Offering obeisances (bowing down) is a physical expression of humility, respect, and submission to the Supreme. It acknowledges Krishna as our Supreme Father and the source of everything we have. Vedic scriptures state that even a single, sincere act of bowing before the Lord can purify the soul, remove the burden of past sins, and help one achieve liberation from the cycle of birth and death.
