The History of ISKCON of Houston
The roots of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) in Houston—often referred to as Hare Krishna Dham—trace back to 1972, when dedicated devotees first began preaching in the area. During these early days, temple services were conducted using pictures of the Deities in a home located in the Montrose district. While the community was active from the start of the decade, the organization was officially incorporated as a non-profit in 1977.
Growth and Relocation
As the community expanded, the temple underwent several significant moves to accommodate its growing mission:
-
1974: The temple moved to a larger facility on Rosalie Street in downtown Houston. It was here that the first Deities, Sri Sri Nitai Chandra and Sri Sri Chaitanya Chandra (Gaura Nitai), were installed.
-
1979: A second set of smaller Gaura Nitai Deities, Sri Sri Nitai Chandra and Sri Sri Gaura Chandra, were installed.
-
1984: Reaching a major milestone, the community moved to its present location on West 34th Street. The site, formerly an old church, was purchased to serve as a permanent home for the increasing congregation.
Expansion and Installation
Following the 1984 move, devotees began extensive renovations. Once the temple was ready in 1986, the presiding Deities, Sri Sri Radha Nila-Madhava, were installed. The spiritual family continued to grow with subsequent installations:
-
1989: Sri Sri Giriraj Govardhan was installed.
-
1992: Sri Sri Radha Giridhari arrived at the Houston temple.
Modern Developments
In 1996, the Gauranga Hall was constructed. This cultural center and gathering facility can host up to 500 members during festivals and community functions.
To further serve the spiritual needs of the Houston community, an ambitious project was launched to build a world-class sanctuary. In 2014, Sri Sri Radha Nila-Madhava and all the Deities moved into their new, state-of-the-art temple, featuring glorious real marble and a custom-made teakwood altar.

A Global Community of Devotion
Since its founding in 1966, the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) has expanded from a single storefront in New York City into a massive, worldwide confederation. Today, it encompasses over 600 temples, 100 vegetarian restaurants, and dozens of eco-villages and farm communities across nearly every continent. This global presence represents a diverse tapestry of cultures, languages, and backgrounds, all united by the practice of Bhakti Yoga and the mission to spread spiritual knowledge to every town and village.
The Governing Body Commission (GBC)
Leadership & Governance
To manage such a vast and diverse international society, Srila Prabhupada established a unique leadership structure designed to ensure long-term stability and spiritual purity.
The Governing Body Commission (GBC) was established by His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, the Founder-Acarya of ISKCON, to serve as the ultimate managing authority for our global society. Comprised of senior devotees, the commission ensures the spiritual integrity and organizational health of ISKCON centers worldwide.
By following the visionary instructions of Srila Prabhupada, the GBC provides the guidance and oversight necessary to maintain a unified mission of devotional service. They act as the “will of the founder,” translating ancient Vedic wisdom into practical administrative policies for the modern world.
